When a global pandemic hits, it might be safe to hope for a reprieve from additional steps before claims are approved within healthcare systems and large organizations alike. Most physicians in the US, however, had no such luck. According to a recent survey conducted by the American Medical Association (AMA), 94% of physicians reported care delays due to waiting for health insurers to authorize vital care. Of 1000 practicing physicians surveyed in December 2020, 30% reported that prior authorization (PA) requirements led to serious negative repercussions, including hospitalization, life-threatening events, and disability or permanent bodily damage.

Prior authorization reform is at the top of the AMA’s to-do list when it comes to advancing patient care. Organizations representing pharmacists, medical groups, hospitals, health plans, and the AMA itself joined forces in January 2018 to sign a commitment statement aimed at improving 5 key areas of the PA process. Since then, not much progress has been made towards implementing change.
