Cervical Cancer Disparities

Of the many cancers women fight every year, cervical cancer is one of the more deadly, with a 66% 5-year survival rate (compared to breast cancer, which is at 90%). This is why raising awareness about cervical cancer and HPV vaccination during January is so vital. The CDC states that 9 out of 10 cases of cervical cancer are caused by HPV, so vaccination is essential.

Raising awareness of cervical cancer also means calling attention to the racial and socioeconomic disparities that are prevalent in the data surrounding the disease. The highest incidence rate of cervical cancer occurs in Hispanic women, followed by non-Hispanic Black women, according to Mayo Clinic. Black women have the highest mortality rate from cervical cancer. With early and periodic screening, cervical cancer is largely preventable.

This data is largely due to the discrepancies Hispanic and Black women face in their access to healthcare because of systemic racism in the United States. Socioeconomic components including housing, education, wealth, and employment can all strongly impact health literacy, healthcare access, and the quality of care.

With January being Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, it is important to raise awareness about the racial groups that are disproportionately affected by this largely preventable disease. For more resources surrounding health disparities in the United States, visit the CDC.
